Bringing fresh wood to a dying fire.
E11 is an art festival that encourages radical self expression and radical self reliance. These principles are representative in the fact that there is little supplied by event organizers, no police, or security other than a few rangers who have no established authority. There are no staff emergency personel or EMTs. And aside from a basic med tent run by volunteers, there are no medical facilities. So basically once you’re in, you’re on your own, surrounded people encouraged to explore their personal boundaries.
This is in extreme contrast to the mainstream values of the surrounding areas that the majority of people who attend the event come from. So this type of event naturally attracts those that have repressed feelings and seek out a less restrictive environment.
E11 is similar to other types of events, but differ in the fact that it has been primarily an adult event. Most other similar events don’t have the age restrictions and therefore attract a younger crowd which has developed into a distinct subculture.
Since there is a limited number of younger people compared to the establish E11 community, there is a bit of a generation gap.
Nature has a tendency to fill these gaps as a survival mechanism. In an environment with little restriction, it is up to the individuals to determine what is appropriate and self regulate. So the nature of the event doesn’t lend to many established codes of conduct.
As a result this leads to an atmosphere of gray areas at this type of interactive event. Camp Pet Defile was a social experiment to address these gray areas through interactive projects that attract younger people such as stuffed animal costumes and face painting. No flash? I was always an entrepreneur as a kid. Free market capitalism, limited goverment, Limbaugh loving little republican. Ya know, freedom. I didn’t want anything getting in the way of my creative spirit. Since then I’ve noticed how some other people’s ideas of freedom have gotten in the way of mine. Since then it’s been hard to adhere to any generalized concepts of freedom as a poor adult in rich America. My faith in my fellow man ain’t what it used to be.
As an adult I like to think I’ve evolved past a right/left paradigm or any duality for that matter. I’m always looking out for the best (or worst) in everything. Disecting ideas and ideologies.
We seem to live in such a polarized climate in a complicated world. With such extreme political philosophies out there, it seems the most extreme view point is somewhere in the middle. Rejecting everything and nothing at the same time.
I’m now venturing out into the unknown again with my political views having shifted from right to left to something else. But the underlying theme through it all is that if it ain’t funny, it ain’t money. Funny first. And if you put it ahead of any ideology, even you’re own, it gives you the confidence to self reflect in a way nothing else can. Intelligent comedy tickles the brain.

My friend Dave has a candid, impromtu yet distinct style of portrait photography. He uses a simple point and shoot camera with no other equipment than his Mac to do quick edits that really make his subjects pop.
You’ll find Dave all around Salt Lake wherever there are interesting people to photograph.

Anthony struck out on his own, and began producing IDM. When local downtempo clique Audiflo heard of Anthony’s brave struggle, they gave him the opportunity to join their crew. With Audioflo, Anthony made a name for himself in Salt Lake City and beyond in the early 2000s as an authority in IDM before earning his stripes as a glitch DJ and producer.
Now a San Francisco resident, a.vanvranken can be found slaying crowds around the Bay Area, but he still finds time to share his talents back in Utah as part of the Hive Collective.
